Alternative Fuel Vehicles
Last Updated: 03/05/24An alternative fuel vehicle is a vehicle that runs on a fuel other than traditional petroleum fuels (petrol or Diesel fuel); and also refers to any technology of powering an engine that does not involve solely petroleum (e.g. electric car, hybrid electric vehicles, solar powered).

Federal agencies are mandated by the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) and the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) to purchase alternative fuel vehicles, increase consumption of alternative fuels, and reduce petroleum consumption.
Agencies wishing to buy AFVs may submit an order through GSA's AutoChoice online ordering tool.
