Chicago Federal Center: John C. Kluczynski Federal Building, U.S. Post Office Loop Station, Everett M. Dirksen U.S. Courthouse
Project Summary
All three Chicago Federal Center buildings were certified as sustainable assets in Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 as part of GSA’s program to meet the Guiding Principles for Sustainable Federal Buildings for Existing Buildings. That year, the campus significantly exceeded the baseline Guiding Principles requirements for energy, water, and waste:
- Reduced energy use by 56% from the FY 2003 baseline and by 23% from the FY 2015 baseline
- Reduced water use by 77% from the FY 2007 baseline
- Achieved an average waste diversion rate of 59%
Sustainability Features
Since FY 2022, 100% of the electricity used at the Chicago Federal Center has been from renewable sources. This contributed to the broader GSA Region’s 69% overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from FY 2008 and 9% reduction year-over-year from FY 2022 to FY 2023 (GSA Region 5).
Sustainability is an integral part of the Chicago Federal Center’s operations. To improve the comfort and wellbeing of building occupants, the Chicago Federal Center has implemented operational practices that promote the purchase and use of environmentally preferable products and practices that sustain and improve indoor environmental quality.
Largely due to the certification of the Chicago Federal Center, GSA Region 5 increased its certified square footage percentage under the Guiding Principles for Sustainable Federal Buildings program by 14% – from 34% in FY 2022 to 48% in FY 2023.
