GSA Fleet Zero Emission Bus Team – Zion National Park

Project Summary

In July 2020, Zion National Parkopens in new window and GSA Fleetopens in new window partnered to purchase a new fleet of battery powered electric low-floor transit buses and associated electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). With GSA’s assistance, Zion configured the buses, evaluated competitive offerings, and placed orders in three batches from GSA’s IDIQ contractsopens in new window. Comprehensive pre-production measures contributed to the successful delivery of meticulously crafted and thoroughly inspected buses that exceeded Zion's expectations.

Sustainability Features

Zion ordered 30 buses within 18 months — five 40’ buses in April 2022, twelve 60’ buses in August 2022, and thirteen 60’ buses in July 2023. In August 2023, the GSA and Zion teams inspected the first batch of orders at the supplier's factory.

Meanwhile, in November 2022, the team conducted an inspection and acceptance of the first batch of 60KW DC fast chargers. The EVSE was delivered, installed, tested, and commissioned for service by Zion’s infrastructure team before the first five buses arrived in September 2023.

As of 2024, Zion’s infrastructure was the largest concentration of DC fast charge infrastructure in the federal fleet as the park plans to charge its entire fleet of buses off-peak every night. Each bus is equipped with over 550 KW of batteries and the estimated range is a little over 200 miles, which fully covers their daily 200 mile route.
