According to BioPreferred, bathroom and spa cleaners are designed to clean and/or prevent deposits on surfaces found in bathrooms and spas including, but not necessarily limited to, bath tubs and spas, shower stalls, shower doors, shower curtains, and bathroom walls, floors, doors, and counter and sink tops. Products in this item may be designed to be applied to a specific type of surface or to multiple surface types. They are available both in concentrated and ready-to-use forms. BioPreferred maintains an electronic product catalog listing products that either 1. are eligible for preferred federal procurement, or 2. have earned the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label.
The Safer Choice program covers a variety of bathroom-related cleaning products, including toilet bowl cleaners, tub/tile cleaners, countertop cleaners, and more.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created the Design for the Environment (DfE) logo to make it easier for people to find disinfectants that meet their high environmental and health standards. Products must be registered with EPA and meet federal disinfectant standards (FIFRA) to make disinfectant claims. Disinfectant products that carry the DfE logo contain ingredients that meet an additional high standard for both human and environmental health and help people protect their family, workplace, community, and environment.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Recommended Specifications, Standards, and Ecolabels
Executive Order (EO) 14057, Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability, (08 DEC 2021), requires federal agencies to purchase sustainable products and services certified to the standards/ecolabels included in the Recommendations to the maximum extent practicable.
Cleaners certified under UL2759 may be available from contractors on the following GSA Multiple Award Schedules:
- Schedule 51V SINs 105 001 and 105 002
- Schedule 73 SIN 375 341
- Schedule 75 SIN 75 200
Cleaners certified under Green Seal GS-37 may be available from contractors on the following GSA Multiple Award Schedules:
- Schedule 51V SINs 105 001 and 105 002
- Schedule 73 SIN 375 341 and 375 117
- Schedule 75 SIN 75 200
Guiding Principles for Sustainable Federal Buildings
For products such as bathroom and spa cleaners, the applicable Guiding Principle for High Performance and Sustainable Buildings depends on what characteristics are included in the product. If it has biobased content it would be GP 5, if it is low-emitting it would be GP 4, if it's both, it would be included in both. "Low emitting" would be any product that has a low emissions or low VOC standard.
Potential LEED Contributions
This product may contribute* toward points in multiple LEED v4 rating systems, including areas required for LEED v4 building certification. Primarily, the credits will apply in the Building Operations and Maintenance (O+M) category. Specific credits are:

- Low-Emitting Materials
* It is important to note that no products, individually or collectively, can guarantee a specific number of points for LEED Category credit. Each credit will need to be matched to the product by a certified professional.
