Vending Equipment

Design Guidance

Overall Strategies

Vending machines, usually running 24 hour per day to keep drinks cool and snacks well lit, can contribute significantly to a facility's energy use. When redesigning or building a new space, consider reducing the number of vending machines across the building and consolidating the remaining units to a few high-traffic locations (like the cafeteria). For non-refrigerated machines, consider powering down machines completely during non-business hours using a timer.  Learn more about vending machines at EnergyStar.govopens in new window.

Best Practices

  • For greater efficiently install energy conservation technology on each machine.
  • Ensure vendors are installing ENERGY STAR vending machines.
  • Have your vendor remove some or all of the lights.
  • Consider placement and needs carefully, collocate and share equipment to reduce number of machines required.
