Composting Toilets


Description

Composting toilets use an aerobic process to break down waste by using little or no water. There are two types of composting toilets: self-contained and split units.


Tips

O+M Tips

  • Use cleaning chemicals and solutions that are Green Seal certified
  • May require maintenance such as mixing or stirring compost with recommended microbe, sawdust, or pete moss mixes.

End of Life Tips

  • If in good condition, toilets can be donated to organizations like Habitat for Humanity that will reuse them.
  • To recycle old toilets visit Earth911.com to determine the capacity of local facilities.

For alignment with LEED Standards

  • Water Use Reduction: Employ strategies that in aggregate use at least 20% less water than the water use baseline. Toilets with a flush rate of less than 1.6 gpf can contribute to the water use reduction.
