Human Behavior on Planted Roofs

Human behavior and interaction with the building space plays a critical component in achieving holistic sustainability. Benefits can only be achieved and sustained if the occupants and planted roof system are working in tandem.

Cultural/Community Involvement

Since many planted roof specifications are site-specific, it can be helpful to collaborate with local governments to refine its design process. Additionally:

  • Collaborative site planning and design can support viability of key pollinators and help promote biodiversity of native plants and species via cross-pollination (see the Presidential Memorandum on pollinators and the National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators).
  • The clustering effect of planted roofs provide significantly stronger impacts to heat island reductions and improvements in ambient air quality.
  • More local projects drives down costs, improves skills of installers, and supports local job creation and industry growth.

Ecological Education

Planted roofs not only benefit the building owner but also provide many community benefits. Where access is available, planted roofs can function as demonstration sites to educate tenants and the public on how living infrastructure works.
